Copyright: Seeking Permission

Copyright guidance in a university setting

Copyright guidance in a university setting

First Steps

Check first to see if the work you want to use is covered by copyright (see the Duration tab)

Next, check to see if your use is covered under a license.  The Stout University Library reference staff can assist you with this.  Online articles contain copyright information at the end of the article.  The UW System has negotiated System-wide licenses with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC for music performing rights.  Check the UW System Legal Counsel website for more info:http://www.uwsa.edu/general-counsel/legal-topics/copyright/

If the license doesn't preclude your use, evaluate whether it is covered under Fair Use

If none of these covers your proposed use, you will need to contact the copyright owner and ask for permission.

Use the links below to assist in finding the copyright owner and filling out a permission form.
