Getting Started with Libby

The Library offers a collection of ebooks and audiobooks accessible via the web or the Libby app. Access is provided through a subscription managed by the Universities of Wisconsin (UW System).

How to access ebooks and audiobooks:

  1. Navigate to our OverDrive collection of ebooks if you are using a browser. Download the Libby app if you are using a mobile device.
  2. In Libby, select the 3 bars menu icon at the bottom of the app to see a page that lists your library. From there, select Add Library. You can connect to multiple libraries through the Libby app such as UW-Stout Library and a public library.
  3. In the search box, type University of Wisconsin System.
  4. Select University of Wisconsin System to reach the dedicated University of Wisconsin System screen.
  5. Next, select Sign In with My Library Card.
  6. From the list asking Where do you use your library card?, you should select University of Wisconsin-Stout. Note that you may need to select the "9 more" button to see the full list of campuses.
  7. Select Next and then log in using your Stout credentials.

How to read an ebook or listen to an audiobook:

  1. Browse or search titles.
  2. Select "Borrow". Tap the book cover to start reading or listening in Libby.
  3. Place a hold to join the waitlist if an ebook or audiobook is not available.

Getting Started

Who can access Libby?
Any current University of Wisconsin faculty, student or staff member can borrow ebooks and audiobooks using Libby.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Access to Libby is granted directly through your existing Stout credentials. Sign in using your Stout username and password.
What if I already use the Libby app with another library system?
That's fine! Libby supports multiple libraries. You can keep your public library access alongside your Stout access. In the Libby menu, select Add a Library to add another library.

Using Libby for Reading and Listening

Can I use a Kindle to read ebooks?
Yes, you can send most ebooks to a Kindle device or the Kindle app. Look for the Read with Kindle option after checking out the title and then login to your Amazon account.
Are all formats available for all titles?
No. A title may be available as an ebook only, an audiobook only, or in both formats. Libby will indicate the format(s) available for borrowing.
Can I download ebooks and audiobooks to read offline?
Yes. Libby downloads titles directly to your device. Downloads happen over Wi-Fi by default but can be adjusted in the app settings.

Loans, Holds, and Returns

How long can I borrow ebooks and audiobooks?
You have a choice of 7, 14, or 21 day loan periods.
How many ebooks and audiobooks can I borrow at one time?
You can have up to 5 titles checked out at any one time.
What if I want to borrow an ebook or audiobook that is checked out?
You can put a hold on the title in Libby and will receive a notification when the title is available. After you place a hold, view your spot in line by going to your Shelf and select Holds.
How many holds can I have at one time?
You can have up to 5 titles on hold at any one time.
How do I renew ebooks and audiobooks?
You can attempt to renew a title up to three days before its due date, provided there are no holds. Go to your Shelf, select Manage Loan, and select Renew Loan.
How do I return ebooks and audiobooks?
Titles are automatically returned on the due date. No overdue fines! You can return an item early by selecting Manage Loan and then Return Early.
